This is an anonymous French model. The original (in private collection) is made entirely of ivory, and while the maker is unknown due to the lack of a stamp, based on the slightly relaxed tapering of the inner bore and the external characteristics, it is considered likely that it was made by the Hotteterre family between the second half of 17th century and the beginning of 18th century.
Not only is its appearance unique, but its tone is also exceptionally distinctive, offering a sound that combines simplicity with elegance, producing an indescribable resonance. The bore is apparently less tapered than typical Baroque recorders, giving it a sound reminiscent of Renaissance recorders.
Since the original is tuned at approximately a’=415Hz, it can be considered a strong candidate for performing French baroque repertoire at that pitch, though the standard pitch for French music in those days was lower than a’=400Hz.
